Sublimation vs. Print

Choose the right printing method for your team uniforms.

For custom sportswear with all-over colour, detailed graphics, names and numbers, dye sublimation is an excellent choice—especially for polyester performance fabrics.

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE

Two methods. Different results.

“Printing” can mean several different processes. The best option depends on your fabric, artwork, quantity and the finish you want. Here is how sublimation compares with common surface-printing methods.

▤FOR SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS

Surface Printing

Methods such as screen printing and heat transfer apply ink or a transfer layer to the surface of a garment. The result varies with the technique, material and care.

  • Can suit simple graphics or specific fabric types
  • Useful for some cotton garments and add-on details
  • May create a noticeable layer or texture
  • Large, multi-colour artwork may require more setup or separate applications
Best for: selected logos, simple graphics or products where sublimation is not suitable.

“Print” covers several technologies, so durability, feel and cost are not the same for every surface-printing method.

HOW SUBLIMATION WORKS

From artwork to finished uniform

Your approved artwork is transferred to the fabric before the garment panels are cut and sewn.

01
▧

Prepare the artwork

Colours, logos, patterns, names and numbers are arranged in the uniform design.

02
▤

Print the transfer

The design is printed onto special transfer paper using sublimation inks.

03
♨

Apply heat and pressure

The dye turns into gas and bonds with the compatible polyester fibres.

04
◫

Cut the fabric panels

The printed fabric is cut according to the garment pattern and size requirements.

05
✂

Sew and finish

The panels are stitched together and checked as a finished custom uniform.

WHY TEAMS CHOOSE SUBLIMATION

Made for bold designs and active play.

Sublimation lets your team combine distinctive artwork with a smooth, lightweight print finish.

Start your custom design
01

Full-colour freedom

Combine multiple colours, gradients, patterns and detailed graphics in one design.

02

Smooth feel

Because the dye bonds with the fabric, the printed design does not create a thick surface layer.

03

Durable graphics

When correctly produced and cared for, sublimated designs resist the cracking and peeling associated with some surface prints.

04

Personalised details

Team names, player numbers and individual details can be included in the artwork.

QUICK COMPARISON

Which method fits your project?

Use this general guide to start the conversation. The final recommendation depends on the garment, fabric and artwork.

FeatureDye sublimationScreen / heat-transfer printing
Full-colour, all-over artworkExcellent fitDepends on method and setup
Fabric compatibilityBest on white or light polyesterVaries; some methods suit cotton and other fabrics
Feel on the garmentUsually smooth, with no raised print layerMay leave a layer or texture
Names and numbersCan be built into the artworkMay need separate printing or application

This is a general comparison, not a guarantee of performance. Fabric composition, production quality, use and washing care all matter.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Sublimation printing FAQ

Can sublimation be used on cotton?

Traditional dye sublimation needs polyester or a compatible polymer-coated surface. It does not work directly on 100% cotton in the same way. If you need cotton garments, ask us about other printing options.

Will a sublimated design crack or peel?

The dye bonds with compatible polyester fibres rather than forming a separate layer on top, so cracking and peeling of the sublimated image are not typical. Follow the garment care instructions to help maintain the uniform.

Can I use many colours, gradients and detailed logos?

Yes. Sublimation is well suited to complex, full-colour designs, including patterns, gradients, logos, names and numbers. Please make sure you have permission to use any third-party artwork or trademarks you provide.

Is sublimation always cheaper than other printing?

Not always. Total cost depends on the garment, order quantity, artwork, customisation and production requirements. For detailed all-over sportswear designs, sublimation can be an efficient option; request a quote for your project.

What products can be sublimated?

It is commonly used for polyester sportswear such as soccer, basketball and volleyball uniforms. Suitability depends on the fabric composition and garment construction.
